B1 Series Customer Reviews

RCCrawler.com forum member, "Kaetwo", reviews the B1-R in a 2.2 Scale Crawler

Well I got my chance this weekend to really beat on the B1-R and in a nut shell; it's nothing short of amazing!

Here is a brief overview of what I was running
2.2 Scale Jeep - Very heavy
35x1 motor
Axial tranny at 87/12
Maxamps 1550 3C Lipo (about 1 hour 45 min of runtime)
Hitec 645 Steering Servo
B1-R ESC
Airtronics MX-3 Radio

The Beating
The beating was about 1 hour and 45 min. long in high traction rock, dirt, grass and gravel.

I really put this rig through the paces. It's a fairly heavy rig, running RC4WD Mud Slingers and a ton of scale accessories. I took it off some sweet jumps , performed a bunch of hill climbing, slow crawling/follow the leader type stuff, rock racing, etc and the ESC didn't show any signs of fading. For the astute reader you'll notice that I didn't mention a Castle Creations BEC The stock BEC is 5 volt 1.5 amps and it worked flawlessly! The drag brake set at 35% was spot on and the 3C Lipo cut-off did it's job perfectly. The only hint of work that the ESC showed was that it got a little warm and this was to be expected. It never got hot though. I just may run one of these in my comp rig with a CC BEC (due to the fact that I will be running a digital servo and a dig servo). It was very smooth and performed every bit as well as the FX-R and the best part is that it's smaller than the FX-R.

Improvements
The only think that I would like to see is a water proof version. I didn't mention this in my FX-R review because I was using the ESC for my 2.2 comp rig. However for scale, it would be nice to have the ability to run the esc underwater without having to worry

Overall
The Tekin B1-R met and exceeded every one of my expectations. Once again Tekin has produced a killer little ESC.....Well done!

Well I had an opportunity to test out the Tekin B1R yesterday and LOVE IT!!!! Okay, I wasn't looking to replace any of the Tekin FX-Rs that I have and rave about here.  I simply wanted to test some more of Tekins products and thought this little ESC deserved to be looked at.

First off I want to warn everyone that this esc is rated for a motor no larger than a 380 size. So take this into consideration when looking over this review. I of course will not be taking heed to that warning

Setup Used
Tekin B1R
Hitec 645 Servo
2.2 Scale Crawler
Airtronics MX-3 Radio System
MaxAmps 1550 3 Cell Lipo
Integy 35x1 Motor
Tranny - Axial
Gearing - 87/12

Size / Weight
Weight - Do we honestly need to go there? It comes in at a whopping 0.28 oz.
Size - 1.0" x .93" x .35" (25.4 x 23.6 x 8.3mm)

That's smaller than the FX-R. This thing is tiny! I don't know why you would want a smaller ESC than the FX-R (except for 1/18th or 1/12th scale) but in crawling this thing is silly small. I love it!

Technical Specs

  • Battery Input - 4-8 Cells / 2-3S Lipo, Ah, 3S Lipo.....You gotta love the power.
  • BEC - 5v / 1.5A
The BEC had me worried at first but with my endpoints properly setup, I had no problems with the ESC. I however will be running a Castle Creations BEC from Holmes Hobbies just to eliminate any heat or failures with amping out.
  • Motor Limit - No limit up to 380 size.  Now onto the 380 motor size...This is what worries me the most, but I have to say that I have had no trouble with it as of yet. Time will tell and this weekend I'll make sure to really put it through the paces.
  • Max Amps - 30 amps, This really isn't a huge issue for me but could be for some of you with heavy rigs.

First Impressions
I have to say that I was not expecting this ESC to perform well at all, especially with the BEC and Motor restrictions, however it really surprised me. It has all of the programming that the FX-R / FX has, but comes in such a small package. I set my 3S Lipo CutOff, Drag Brake to 30% and the Reverse type to instant and I was up and running. I ran nearly half the pack in the grass, doing constant turns and stops, wheelies, jumps, etc....and it never broke a sweat. My motor was a little toasty but the esc was barely warm.

I drove it up and down the curb and some rocks that I have in the yard and the drag brake worked flawlessly. For some reason I really didn't think that the ESC would hold that well, but again it surprised me.

Another thing that I dig about this ESC is how smooth it is. The low-end control is vastly better than any other ESC near it's size. The control was nothing short of amazing!

Conclusion
As I said before, I had no expectation of this ESC performing nearly as well as it did and in every category, this ESC exceeded my expectations. Please keep in mind that this is just my first experience with this ESC. I will report more after this weekend of being on the rocks
